It's not the most beautiful square in the city, it's very mineral, but that will change in the near future.
Its name comes from the word " Thilhle " which means sorting of herds from the Middle Ages, or from the occupation of Trinitarian monks in the 14th. century.
But, it is still a place where we love to come and sit at the many pleasant terraces of the café-restaurants, or to sit at the foot of the splendid fountain.
In addition, this square has buildings with quite remarkable architecture.
The History :
We immediately notice its triangular shope.
It is the essential meeting place to reach all the other districts of the historic city.
Under the ancient dress, it is the crossroads of the Roman city : TOLOSA .
In the Middle Ages, it remained an important place.
Many artisans, capitouls, who administers the city and merchants lived there until 18th. century.
There are also many professions such as lockmiths, ironworkers and wood blanket makers.
In 1820, it was cleared by the city's architect " Virebent " and decorated with a splendid fountain that we one to " Urbain Vitry " .
This widening of the square in the 18th. century led to the destruction of all the houses, to widen the road by seven meters.
Only 15th. century corundum houses remains
The Frech Revolution brought many changes.
Indeed, the religious order of the Trinity and all the buildings belonging to them were destroyed.
In the 90er, The Trinity street benefited from a semi-pedestrian development.
The remarkable heritage of Trinity square " Place de la Trinité " :
If we could compare Trinity square to a foreign square , it would be " the Piazza di Spagna " in Roma.
Same crowd, intensity of mouvement and whatever time of day.
This place was designed as a theatrical production.
There are several neoclassical and art nouveau facades, as well as very friendly terraces where you can relax without any car traffic.
The splendid fountain of the Place de la Trinité by the Toulouse " Urbain Vitry" architect :
It is the first monumental fountain desired in the 19th. century by the Toulouse municipality.
It is one of the first fountains with a spray of water in the city and was created to supply the inhabitants of the district with the waters of the " Château d'Eau " .
It offers the spectacle of its winged sirens and its bronze lion heads , a type of decoration unlike Toulouse.
" Urbain Vitry " will call on the Parisian sculptor " Louis-Alexandre Romagnesi " and the fountain be inaugurated in 1826.
The fountain is accessed by a base of three Carcassonne steps.
The circular basin is made of marble and measures 5 meters in diameter.
The building from the first half of the 19th. century in neoclassical style : " Lamothe building " :
Its Facade had been listed as a historical monument of buildings in France since 1946.
its construction is due to the toulouse " Urbain Vitry " acchitect and its magnificent statue are the work of the sculptor " Louis-Alexandre Romagnesi ".
The building has three floor and an attic.
The opening have cast iron railings with a simple cross. The first floor is opened by three serlians, with pilasters and columns with Doric capitals.
The balcony continues with a cast iron cross railing with motifs of palms and heads of Mercury topped with a Greek one.
One the second floor, there are friezes decorated with palmettes, a cornice and a lion's head.
They are separated by two niches which house statues, allegories of commerce.
Helmeted Mercury holding a cornucopia.
One the third floor, there are square windows separated by two round niches decorated with two busts : a faun and a crowned woman.
All topped by an attic and a portico with Doric columns.
The buiding nulber six in art nouveau style with a splendid glass roof :
This building was built to house a lawyer's office and house his family.
It was built in 1900 by the " Masquet " architect.
The Facade , which retains the sobriety of Hausmann neoclassical constructions, is animated by the fantasies of art nouveau which is particulary found on the Oriel.
It is decorated with plant decorations, animals and stained glass windows.
On the ground floor, there is a nice café : L'Echanson ".
The 20th. century Perry building :
The Facade has five floors.
It is clad in slabs of pink Verona marble.
Smooth and striated whose color evokes Toulouse brick.
Previously, this building was occupied by a luxury clothing store of a large Toulouse family.
Conclusion :
This square is the entrance to " rue des Filatiers , which I will tell you about another post.
In the past, it had an industrial activity mainly revolving aroud clothing.
Today, it is an extremly lively street where you will find many nice little restaurants.
In fact, all the cuisines of the world are represented there.
It is many lovely bars with terraces for a drink.
