INTRODUCTION :

In this article, the blog from Toulouse will tell you about the largest covered market in Toulouse, the " Victor Hugo Market" .
This market is a showcase of our delicious and renowned regional gastronomy !!!.
A little history :
It has existed since 1896 !!!.

The construction of this magnificent metal hall began in 1889 and was completed In 1892.
It was built in honor of Victor Hugo .
The traditional market at " Victor Hugo " was once a magnificent Eiffel-style hall.
But in the 1970s, with the rise of the automobile, it was demolished in general indifference.
In its place, a contemporary-style building was constructed with a dual fonction :

Aa a car park
To continue housing the largest and oldest covered market in France.
The architecture of this parking structure, characteristic of the Modern Mouvement, was designed by architects " Joachim et Pierre Génard assisted by Pierre Lafitte " .
It is built in concrete.
In 2017 and 2019, the market underwent extensive renovation and greened, allowing tou to enjoy the many terraces, bars, and restaurants the make this area so lively.
The covered " Victor Hugo Market " :

Since 1886, the Victor Hugo Market has been an emblematic place in Toulouse.
Ideally located in a heart of the Pink City, it welcomes curious visitors and gourmet food lovers alike.

Around the sixty vendors come together here the to showcase of the richness our local gastronomy.

Among the highlights are the incredible variety and beautifully presented fish stall-quite remarkable given that Toulouse is not by the sea !!!.
Outside the market , all around, you'll find local farmers offering fruits and vegetables from their own production.
Finally, as in all of Toulouse's covered markets, you'll find bars and bars wine with ours outside terraces to enjoy an aperitif before of after doing your shopping.
This adds to the market's warm and convivial atmosphere.

Here's people know the Victor Hugo Covered Market has a gallery on the first floor.
We could even say that it's the main attraction of the market.
I believe it is unique in France !!!.
You need to open the small door side to the main entrance and climb the grimy staircase.
This is where gastronomic paradise can be found at lunchtime.
Inside, and on the small outdoor establishments in this gallery will serve you authentic local cuisine or more general dishes made with the market's fresh products !!!.

The Victor Hugo Night :
An interesting and important fact to know is that Toulouse is the only city in France where a municipal councilor is specifically in charge of gastronomic.
This shows just how important, and delicious this field is in our region.
The three covered markets of our city each organize a night event once every quarter, taking turns.
The idea is simple : for one evening, come and enjoy the market's fresh products while celebrating to the sound of a DJ !!! .
I've taken part many atmosphere guaranteed !!! .

First of all, you'll find numerous bars and restaurants with splendid sunny terraces where you can enjoy either regional cuisine or dishes made from fresh market products .
The variety is wide, and I'm sure you'll find something to delight your taste buds.
Around the market, there are also many shops. Notably, " CRIOLO " a well-known chocolatier from Toulouse, which I highly recommend.
There are also two cheese shops nearly : one is called " Betty", which also has a stall inside the market, and the other is "Xavier" .
You'll also find an excellent restaurant called " La Gourmandine ", which I recommend.

Go for a drink at " La Biche sur le toit ", a venue not far the Victor Hugo market :
This is the thing to do if you ever visit Toulouse.
The place is also quite unique, as it is located on the rooftop terrace atop the " Gallerie Lafayette " in our city.
Once you reach the top, you'll discover a room with stylish 1970s inspired decor.
