  • Introduction :

What can be said is that in Toulouse region, the coexistence between Catholics and Protestants has never been good .

The protestants were well established in our region, and the King of France was Catholic...

It was during the Wars of Religion that everything changed.

The greatest unrest took place in 1562 in Toulouse.

Riots, massacres, and street fight between Protestants and Catholics in the streets of Toulouse resulted in between 3 000 and 5 000 deaths.

This led to the exclusion of all Protestants from Toulouse after May 17, 1562.

You will discover that the location on the Protestant Temple of Toulouse might bring a smile !!! .

  • A little history :

It was in 1271, with the advent of " King Philip III the Bold " , that he took possession of the county of Toulouse and annexed it.

To establish his authority, the King had the royal treasury built on " Place du Salin " .

A building with an imposing 2 500M2 architecture, featuring 20 meters-high tower.

In the Middle Ages, this was where the royal agents held trials, collected various royal taxes, and kept records of titles related to the royal domain.

in 1463, King " Louis XI " passing through Toulouse, stayed there for two months.

This makes people smile, it's that the location of the Protestant Temple of Toulouse is that it stands in the former royal treasury of the Catholic King of France.

At that time, many Protestants from Toulouse were tortured and executed at this location between the 16th. and 18th. century.

In 1792, during the French Revolution, the royal treasury was sold.

It will be bought back in 1807 by the " Sisters of Charity of Our Lady " .

They own the convent and the church of " Saint-Antonin-du-Salin " , as well as the former treasury.

But in 1904, they were expelled and everything was sold.

Two Protestant marchants , after acquiring the building of the former treasury with an area of 850M2 sold it in 1908 to the " Reformed Cultural Association " .

It was the Protestant architect " Léon DAURES " who restored and resigned the building in a neo-Gothic style, incorporating some medieval elements !!! .

The initial work in the 19th. century involved providing the tower with a single-pitched roof.

It was not until 1908, with the purchase of the temple by the " Cultural Association of the Reformed Church of Toulouse " , that more extensive work took place .

Among them :

  1. The installation of stained windows by " DE CALMELS " .

  2. The creation of neoclassical windows on the facade.

  3. The magnificent organ and the galleries will be created by " Théodore Puget " .

The first service was held in November 1911.

The Protestant temple of Toulouse was classified as a historical monument in 1990.

I've mentioned it before, but every year in October, the " Toulouse les Orgues Festival " takes places in Toulouse.

Toulouse, due to its exceptional organ heritage was for a time considered the world capital of the organ.

On this occasion, concerts are organized within the temple.

It's a great opportunity to come and discover this remarkable building.

That's all for today my friends.

I wish you a great day and a good reading.
