The Salengro Place in Toulouse.



  • Introduction :


This square was built in tribute to " Roger Salengro" ( 1890/1936 ) , who was a French left-wing politician.


It's a beautiful square, with little traffic, serving as a crossroad between many commercial districts of the city.

It forms a triangle 700 square meters, close to the Capitole square.

This square, with its beautiful fountain in the middle and its sunny little terraces, gives it a touch of Italy.


  • A little history :



In the Middle Ages, in the 16th. century, this square was called " Puits-Verdet " because a well of that name was located there.

At its creation, between 1847 and 1849 after the destruction os numerous houses, the square was established and named "Place Roger Salengro" .


But it was in 17th. century that this square gained importance, as many wealthy individuals and nobles from the city settled there.

Even " Pierre Paul Riquet " , the designer of the Canal du Midi, and later his son were property owners and resided in an appartement here.


The current square was inaugurated in 1849 after the demolition of numerous houses.

To liven up the square, the flower market from Lafayette alleys, now President Franklin Roosvelt Avenue was installed in 1849 .


Two years later, the neighborhood population secured the construction os the magnificent fountain that it known today, and it was inaugurated in 1853.


  • The buildings of interest in this place :


The building located in numerous 1 Salengro Place :



In this building with a large carriage entrance, we can notice a plaque on its facade.

Indeed, the first building from the 17th. century was the residence of " Pierre Paul Riquet ", the designer of the Canal du Midi.


The current building is classical, built in the 18th. century.

Its maen features are its wrought iron railings on the first floor.

Its facade extends over four levels. The floors diminish in height and are separated by a brick string course.

The windows are highlighted by little setback.


If you look through the slightly open door at the top of the staircase, you can notice a magnificent stained glass window .

In fact, in Toulouse at one time, there were artisans who created fabulous stained glass windows.


The building located in numerous 20, Salengro Place " Jaurès building " :



On the facade on this 17th. century building, there is a plaque.

Indeed, between 1889 and 1892, " Jean Jaurès ", a prominent left-wing politician from Toulouse, lived in this building.

The appartement will be the place where he will start a family and engage heavily in politics until winnig the municipal election.


The building located in numerous 6 in Salengro Place :



The building is in neoclassical style and was constructed in the second quarter of the 19th. century.

It consists of a four-story brick facade.

On the first floor, the columns are framed by slender Dorics columns.

On the third floor, they are framed by pilasters. On the third floor, they are framed by pilasters.

The elevation is topped with a frieze of Terracotta scrolls and a cornice with modillons.

On the fourth floor, we can observe the presence of a more recent cornice.


  • The fountain :



It is designed by the foundries of " Val d'Osne " and was inaugurated in 1853.

It consists of a stone basin upon which the cast iron fountain stands.

Tritons are noticeable, as well as a group at two birds amidst reeds.

At the very top, the final basin forms a shell supporting a Greek Kore ( Persephone ) .

It's located on the square, and for me it is the most beautiful florist in downtown Toulouse.

For the gourmets out there, this tea salon is worth a visit.

Its cakes and teas are delicious. It has a beautiful and pleasant sunny terrace.

But come early, as it gets crowded.


An old store : a haberdashery :


You'll notice that even though the storefront has been redone, it has retained its old-time charm.

It's a haven for sewing enthusiasts, you will find absolutely everything you need to indulge your passion.












  • The neighbothood aroud the Salengro place :



It the most popular place for shopping in Toulouse because there are numerous beautiful shops in the streets adjacent to Place Salengro.

The commercial offer there is indeed very diverse.

It's also on the street around the square .

As you stroll throught the adjacent streets, you'll discover many bars and restaurants with lovely and pleasant little terraces.


  • A building with truty remarkable architecture, at number 5, Baronie street 31 000 Toulouse:



The building was construted in the second half of the 19th. century.

It features a Neo-Renaissance ceramic-style decoration forusing on the central turret and bay.

Stone columns separate the arcades and the mezzanine.



The decorations are abundants characterized by friezes with winged monters and flowers.

The turret is built of bricks and terracotta decorated by " Auguste Virebent " in 1845.

It is adorned with angel heads, fruit basckets, foliage, and ribbans.

There are also had of dragon paws.

The pediments are decorated with human heads and mythical animals.
